Egoic Entrepreneurship

Please enjoy this transcript of the Crown Yourself Podcast, with your host, transformational story coach, Kimberly Spencer (@Kimberly.Spencer)

Entrepreneurship is being glamorized like a crown everyone should wear—but what if that crown was never meant for you?

In this audio-only Crown Yourself episode, we dismantle one of the most unspoken truths in conscious business: not every desire to be an entrepreneur is soul-led. Some are ego-driven. Some are borrowed dreams. And some are rooted in comparison, proximity to success, or the illusion of freedom.

Drawing from real client conversations, lived experience, and sovereign leadership wisdom, this episode invites you into a radical inquiry:
Is your entrepreneurial ambition coming from truth—or performance?

We explore the difference between being a visionary, a freelancer, a creative genius, and a full-scale entrepreneur who carries responsibility, risk, and leadership at a cellular level. You’ll hear why wearing 27 hats isn’t always power—and why delegating up may be the most sovereign move you ever make.

This episode isn’t here to shrink you. It’s here to liberate you from identities that were never yours.

Because sovereignty isn’t about titles.
Legacy isn’t about empire-building alone.
And leadership doesn’t require sacrificing alignment for aesthetics.

If you’ve ever questioned whether you’re chasing success—or answering a soul call—this episode will meet you exactly where you are.

đź‘‘ Own your truth.
đź‘‘ Mind your business.
đź‘‘ Your reign is now.

[00:00] Welcome to This Audio-Only Crown Yourself Episode

Is your entrepreneurship coming from a state of ego?

Welcome back to The Crown Herself podcast. This is a special Friday episode that is only available if you are subscribed to the audio version on Spotify and Apple and all other podcast platforms. So this one is not on YouTube.

And as much as I am loving being back on YouTube, this one, I really wanted to have something special for those who just like to consume audio. And so this is a new thing that we're testing with Crown Yourself, and I am so excited to be doing this because these are just going to be quick little bite-size amuse-bouches of inspiration, activation, and perspective shifts to really allow you to see—is this game of building an empire really for me? And to sharpen you as iron sharpens iron.

So my question to you today is: is your entrepreneurship coming from your ego?

[03:00] When Entrepreneurship Looks Sexy—but You’re Already in Your Zone of Genius

And this came from having a conversation with a marketing specialist. She’s crushing it in her field in a business position. She’s already in a business. And the call of entrepreneurship is seeming really sexy for her—and she’s extraordinary in what she does.

But she was like, “I don’t know. I’m feeling like I could probably make more money as an entrepreneur.” And all of the other calls of like, “I’d have more freedom,” and all that.

And I actually checked her for a second. And I said, well yes, eventually you can. Yes, eventually you can have more freedom. But right now, you are operating in your zone of genius as a marketing specialist.

And as soon as you jump into being an entrepreneur, you are wearing 27 other different hats. You are CEO. You are the bookkeeper. You are the marketer. You are the salesperson.

[06:00] The Hidden Cost of Wearing 27 Hats

I said, right now you don’t have to sell anyone on your marketing skill sets. You’ve already sold your company.

Or as I say to my corporate clients—those who are still working in corporate—you have investors in your business or your side hustle, and that is your company that you currently work for.

Your company already sees your potential and already sees your skill set as an asset. So you don’t have to sell anybody on why they should work with you over any other marketing agency or marketing specialist.

And that allowed her to have a perspective shift.

Because so many people on the internet see like, “Oh, entrepreneurship is the thing.”

[09:00] Why I’ll Still Beat the Drum of Entrepreneurship (With Truth)

And I’m like, I will beat the drum of entrepreneurship because I am certifiably unemployable.

I left my last job back in 2017, and I’ve been an entrepreneur fully, full-time, 100% for nearly nine years. Any form of job working for anybody else is not for me.

When I left my last job—where I was teaching as a Pilates instructor in a chiropractic office and also doing consulting for their social media, website design, and business groups—my boss was considering two different people for the Pilates instructor position.

She said she had one who was just a Pilates instructor. And then she said, “And then I have this other one who’s just like a Kimmy.”

[12:00] Leadership Recognizes Leadership

She said, “She does social media, web design, has a freelancing marketing company on the side, and she’s also a Pilates instructor.”

And I said, “Yeah, curious—which one are you going to hire?”

And she said, “The one who’s just a Pilates instructor.”

I said, “Why?”

And she said, “Because there can only be one head bitch in charge.”

And I said, “You’re right. As one head bitch in charge to another—mad respect.”

[15:00] Egoic Entrepreneurship vs. Full-Time Leadership

As I was having this conversation with my client, she was struggling with wanting to begin her marketing agency. Especially because it can feel really sexy when you are surrounded by entrepreneurs.

She saw my success, my level of love for entrepreneurship, and she was like, “Maybe that’s for me.”

And I just challenged her—and I challenge you—is your entrepreneurship desire coming from ego?

Because being an entrepreneur full-time also means supporting a team. It’s not just being a solopreneur, freelancer, or business owner with a side hustle.

Being a full-time entrepreneur means you are building, scaling, creating—and literally creating jobs for other people.

That is your job.

[18:00] Zone of Genius vs. Running the Entire Company

There’s a great quote from the book Becoming Time Rich by Lloyd, an amazing Australian business owner.

He shared a story of a very well-known marketer—arguably one of the best in the world—who replaced himself as CEO of his own company so that he could stay in his zone of genius.

He literally gave himself the job of being in his genius zone, because running the entirety of the company was not it.

So my question to you is: is that actually your zone of genius?

[21:00] Not Everyone Is Built for Entrepreneurship—and That’s Okay

It’s okay if you want to be a freelancer.
It’s okay if you want a side hustle.

But let’s start telling ourselves the truth about what it is that we do, so we don’t put pressure on ourselves with roles, responsibilities, and titles that aren’t actually aligned.

Because not everybody is built to be an entrepreneur.

It takes someone who can tolerate a lot of risk.
It takes someone who can tolerate sacrifice.

I’ve had moments—cash flow crunches—where I chose to decrease my food budget so I could pay my team.

Are you able to withstand decisions like that?

[24:00] Sovereignty Does Not Require Empire-Building

It’s okay to not be the badass boss babe business owner.

You don’t have to be to be queen of your life.
You don’t have to be to be sovereign.

Sovereignty comes from self-truth.

Maybe your leadership isn’t in growing a massive company. Maybe your legacy looks different.

Maybe your authorship is a side hustle that supports your passion and allows purposeful connection.

[27:00] Borrowed Dreams, Visibility, and Ego

Not everybody is built to be visible.
Not everybody is built to be an influencer.
Not everybody can withstand judgment, rejection, or scrutiny.

And sometimes the fear you think is holding you back…
is actually your ego telling you to pursue something misaligned.

[30:00] Delegating Up and Choosing Truth

Sometimes we’re great at delegating down.

But do you need to delegate up?

Do you need to delegate someone into the CEO role so you can stay in your zone of genius?

Is your entrepreneurship desire coming from pain—or true soul desire?
